Boiler installation in Eastbourne, and what it should include

Two quotes for the same house can be a long way apart, and the difference is usually in the parts of the installation nobody mentions. This page is about the installation itself: the work on the day, and what you should have at the end of it.

  • Gas Safe registered
  • Flue and condensate done properly
  • Controls set up and explained
  • Commissioned, with the paperwork at the end

The flue and the condensate

Where the flue comes out decides a lot of the job, and the route the old boiler used is not always one a new boiler can use. That gets settled at the survey, not discovered on the day.

A modern boiler also needs a proper condensate run to drain. The pipework, flue and condensate are done properly, with no extras invented on the day.

Cleaning the system before the new boiler goes on

A new boiler connected to dirty pipework is fed the same sludge that wore out the last one. So the system is cleaned where it needs it before the new boiler is connected. This is the part of an installation that is easiest to leave out of a quote, so it is worth checking whether yours includes it.

Controls you can actually use

The boiler is commissioned, and the controls are set up and explained before we leave, so the system runs the way it was designed to.

The paperwork at the end

Gas work in your home has to be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and you can check the registration on the public register rather than taking our word for it. When the job is finished the installation is signed off and the manufacturer warranty is registered. Most warranties need an annual service to stay valid, so it is worth putting that in the diary from the start.

Questions people ask first

  • What about the boiler warranty?

Manufacturer warranties are registered as part of the job. Most of them require an annual service to stay valid, so it is worth putting that in the diary rather than finding out later that the cover lapsed.

  • How often should a boiler be serviced?

Once a year. It keeps most manufacturer warranties valid, and it is when the parts that are quietly failing get caught, which is cheaper than a breakdown in winter.

  • How long does a boiler replacement take?

It depends on the job. A straight swap in the same position is the simplest. Moving the boiler, converting from tanks in the loft to a combi, or upgrading the gas run is more work. You are told what yours involves after the survey, before you agree to anything.

  • Are you Gas Safe registered?

Yes. The registration number is on this site and you can check it yourself on the public Gas Safe register, which you should do with anyone who works on your gas.

  • Why is one radiator cold?

Cold at the top usually means air. Cold at the bottom usually means sludge, and that is a system problem rather than a radiator problem. Both get diagnosed properly rather than bled and forgotten.

In their words

  • Steve was recommended to me by a friend as I was converting an under stairs cupboard into a cloakroom and toilet and I needed someone friendly and reliable to carry out the plumbing work. I was very impressed with Steve's attitude as nothing was too much trouble and he explained what needed to be done prior to him starting and what parts I needed to supply and what parts he would provide.
